Mushroom gardens

For their permanent food, leafcutter ants that live in the Americas grow fungi on specially prepared leaf matter.

Workers – leafcutters – cut off the leaves and take them to the nest, where they are shredded.

Feeding and tending of fungi is carried out by the smallest workers – gardeners.

They do not feed on the fruiting bodies of the fungus but on the growths that occur in the places where the fruiting bodies are cut off. They are called ant kohlrabi.
